The Overview tab in the Survey Details module contains the map interface on the right, with the survey polygon highlighted in light blue, as shown below. If the survey is not yet mapped, the map will zoom out to New York State and the message The Survey Area Boundary does not exist in the GIS
will display above the survey information.
On the left is a list of fields that provide basic information about the survey. These fields differ depending on the survey type: Building or Archaeology.
- Building Survey Overview
- Survey Type: This will be Building for all building surveys.
- Survey Number: SHPO’s identifying number for the survey, such as 12SR00217. Survey districts, which are historic districts that are inventoried through building surveys, are stored as building survey records in CRIS with the survey number format 12SD00605.
- Building Survey Type: The type of building survey that was conducted. Reconnaissance and Intensive surveys, which are the most common types inventoried by SHPO, are defined by the National Park Service in Chapter I of National Register Bulletin 24, Guidelines for Local Surveys: A Basis for Preservation Planning. A Context Study, which is less common, is a historical overview of the overarching forces (environmental, geographical, social, cultural, political, governmental, technological, etc.) that have shaped land use patterns and development of the built environment of the area under consideration. It establishes the historical significance of properties associated with particular themes.
- Survey Name: The title of the survey.
- CLG Funded: Whether the survey was funded by the Certified Local Government program.
- Sponsor: The name of an organization or other party that sponsored the survey.
- Preparer: The name of the person who prepared the survey. (This is System User for surveys that predate CRIS.)
- Date Completed: The date on which the survey was completed.
- Statewide Survey: Whether the survey includes built resources throughout New York State.
- Survey Area Description: The description of the survey boundary.
- Acreage: The number of acres covered by the survey.
- Number of Properties: The number of built resources included in the survey.
- Trekker Survey Information: These fields will only display for building surveys created with the CRIS Trekker suite of applications.
- Survey Status
- Proposed: SHPO has received the survey proposal and is reviewing the survey area and methodology.
- Approved: SHPO has approved the survey area and methodology. Survey inventory forms can be collected in the field.
- Completed: SHPO has received all survey inventory forms and the final survey report. No further action is needed.
- Survey Lead: The name of the current lead on the Trekker survey project.
- Archaeology Survey Overview
- Survey Number: SHPO’s identifying number for the survey, such as 11SR60346.
- Survey Type: The type of archaeological survey. Generally, surveys will fall into Phase I (divided into IA and IB), II, or III. These phases are defined on SHPO’s Environmental Review: Archeological Surveys page. The survey may also be an addendum survey, a combination of phases, geomorphology, monitoring, or remote sensing, among other types.
- Legacy Report Number: Before CRIS, SHPO inventoried archaeological surveys in an Access database. This number is the autonumber ID for the survey record in that database. This number is not present in new surveys.
- Report Number: Before CRIS, SHPO organized surveys on shelf under their counties. This number is the sequence number for the survey within its county. It appears as a reference number on the bibliography sheets and coverage maps for archaeological surveys, which are available in the CRIS Library. A Report Number can represent multiple surveys conducted for a single project. This number is not present in new surveys.
- Report Title: The name of the survey.
- Report Abstract: A summary of the investigations performed in the survey and the resulting findings.
- Report Date: The date on which the survey was completed.
- Report Author: The author of the survey. This field comes from the Access database that was used to track pre-CRIS surveys. This field is not present in new surveys.
- Sponsor: The name of an organization or other party that sponsored the survey.
- Preparer: The name of the person who prepared the survey. (This is System User for surveys that predate CRIS.)
- Survey Area Description: The description of the survey boundary. For pre-CRIS surveys, this will usually be the county name followed by the municipality or locality.
- Acreage: The number of acres covered by the survey.
- Surface Exam Area: The number of acres that underwent surface examination after plowing or disking the survey area.
- Stripped Area: The total mechanically stripped area in square feet.
- Number Archeo: The number of sites identified in the survey. This is filled in for pre-CRIS surveys only.
- Date Reviewed: The date on which SHPO completed its review of the survey.
- Sq. Footage: The number of square feet that were hand-excavated during Phase II or III investigations.
- Recommendations: The survey’s results or implications for further investigations.
